Proveaux Takes 20th Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational

Spartanburg, SC – The 20th edition of the Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational proved to be a nail biter on a warm September afternoon at The Country Club of Spartanburg.  Caleb Proveaux (Lexington, SC) shot a final round of six-under-par 65 to win by one shot over first day leader Andy Ogletree (Little Rock, MS), and Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, GA).

Proveaux shot an error free 65 making six birdies in route to his 2014 Bobby Chapman Title.  Proveaux made the turn at two under par carding birdies on holes three and five.  He then made back to back birdies twice (holes 11-12 and 16-17) to fire a four-under-par 32 on the back nine.  There must be something about the CCS track as Proveaux’s older brother Cody also claimed a big victory here, the SC Amateur Championship in 2012.  “This was my greatest comeback ever!” Caleb Proveaux exclaimed after his triumph.

First day leader Andy Ogletree had a tough time today.  After playing the front nine in one over par, he made five bogies coming in.  He did make birdie on 17 but then spun his approach shot on the 18th hole off the green and couldn’t get up and down, finishing at four under for the tournament.  Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, GA) tried to put some pressure on the leaders, shooting 34-33 for a 67 and two day total of four under 138.  However it was Proveaux who truly added the heat to earn his most prestigious title to date and become the seventh South Carolinian to win the Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational in his home state.

The 82 players represent 16 states, including 15 state champions, 29 USGA qualifiers and six AJGA victories.  Twenty five of the players are ranked inside the top 100 of eitherGolfweek or Junior Golf Scoreboard.  Robin Wang (Lake Mary, FL) was the top ranked player in the field at number two in the country.

Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational Alumni have won 48 PGA tour titles including, The Masters (Bubba Watson), U.S. Open (Lucas Glover) and FedEx Cup (Bill Haas).  Other notable alumni include Jonathan Byrd, Dustin Johnson, William McGirt, Kevin Kisner, Scott Brown and Brian Harmon. Collectively, nearly $200 million has been earned on the PGA Tour by alumni of the 20 year-old, nationally renowned junior tournament.

The Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational is held in honor of the late Robert H. “Bobby” Chapman, Jr.  Chapman, a longtime member of the Country Club of Spartanburg, was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and Carolinas Golf Association.  He was an accomplished player and served the USGA in several capacities.  In his business life, Chapman was a local and national leader in the textile industry.  The tournament also benefits the Spartanburg County Foundation and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation.  To date, over $320,000 has gone to scholarship recipients through both organizations thanks to the many kind supporters of the Bobby Chapman.

In an effort to continue the charitable nature of this nationally recognized tournament and celebrate the 20th anniversary milestone, an online auction with one-of-a-kind experiences will be offered.  Please visit to see the packages.  One item up for bidding is a golf trip to Hilton Head thanks in part to the support of the Heritage Classic Foundation which is the general sponsor of the RBC Heritage presented by Boeing and The Players Amateur.  The Heritage Classic Foundation has contributed over $28 million to local charities since its inception in 1986 and has a long history of supporting junior golf programs in SC. Many other sponsors supported this year’s anniversary event and with a golf outing, sponsors reception and auction at the Country Club of Spartanburg on September 18.
